Today is Tony's surgery. Thankfully it is 9am and he is still sleeping. We kept him up late last night so he could eat cereal right before midnight. We arrive at the hospital at 1pm.
Two weeks ago we received results from allergy testing and from the sleep study. Allergy testing showed a minor reaction to mold - like mold on fruits and bark mulch. The sleep study much more significant.
There is one number they look at first from the sleep study. It is called an RDI number. This number should be less than 1.5. Tony was 3.2. On a normal night, Tony sleeps for at least 10 hrs. The night of the sleep study they only monitored for 6 hrs. In those 6 hrs he stopped breathing 10 times and his oxygen levels were below 85% when they should be be above 95%. Obviously he has severe obstructed sleep apnea. The results also show that he has central sleep apnea. The blocked is caused by his adenoids and tonsils, which is being corrected today. The central apnea is just his brain not telling his body to breath. There is no surgery to correct the central, but the doctor would like to follow up later to see if perhaps correcting the obstructed apnea if the central isn't addressed any. He says this is the first time he has seen both with the severity of the obstructed.
So before we leave, Tony has $20 itunes to spend on Ipad apps that a dear friend gave him for today. It's all in God's hands and we know that he will feel so much better and sleep so much better after today.
