Break? Fracture? Bruise?

So while Josh was getting his clubs last Saturday, Richard had the two little ones with him.  And as a helping hand, Abi was with them as well.  Abi is only a year older than Tony, but since Tony had baseball try outs, Abi's main job was to keep an eye on Jordonna to help out Uncle Richard.  I was with my parents headed to Pearland with the big kid.  As we are approaching our exit to Pearland, my mom's phone rings.  Of course it is my husband calling.  He tells me that they are on their way to the Urgent Care that they believe Tony has broken his hand.  PANIC sets in!!!!!  I am an hour away and my baby is hurt.  And how will my husband handle that along with two additional kids???  So while I get more of the story, he assures me he "has this" and to go on with our plans.  Do you know how impossible that is for a mom to do??  We arrive at the golf store were Josh and PawPaw start shopping and swinging a few clubs.  I am patiently waiting to hear more news.  After the first hour of waiting, I find out that everyone in the waiting room is there for flu symptoms.  Now my concern has moved from a broken hand to the kids catching the flu.  After two golf stores and Best Buy I receive the phone call that says the PA at Urgent Care has determined that he did break his middle finger.  We were referred to an orthopedic to see on Monday.

So how did this all happen?  Tony was at baseball tryouts and one skill they have to demonstrate is popflys.  The coaches used the pitching machine to get the pop flys to the out field.  Tony was ready to receive one and the ball came right down on his ungloved hand, on his middle finger, jamming it all the way back and down.  Although I didn't see pictures or evidence of it, I'v heard the stories.  It was purple, swollen, and red as soon as it happened.  The picture above was the one I received while we were still gone.

Sunday I unwrapped it so he could take a shower and I was shocked to see that it wasn't bruised, swollen, or red at all.  Granted I also looked at the xrays and could not see where it was broken.  Knowing I'm not a doctor, I leave the diagnosing to the professionals and I'll do what I am told until I'm told otherwise.  They say it is broken, we will follows doctors orders until Monday, but that finger did NOT appear to be broken in any way from what I was seeing.

Monday the orthopedic gets us in and of course he tells us he is fine.  He pulled, twisted, tapped, tugged, turned it in circles, bent it here, bent it there and left the room.  He came back and of course tells us it is not broken and if it doesn't hurt, let him do it.  It being taekwondo, basketball, baseball, jumping on the trampoline and the list goes on and on - he never stops.  The orthopedic did say that it is bruised so it may be tender.  He also mentioned that while he sees no break in the xray, that the growth plate where the injury is, is so small, that if there is damage there we wouldn't be able to see it in images until a few months out.  So with that being said, we are back at "if it doesn't hurt, do it."

I will say, last night it hurt.  He was shooting baskets at practice and went for a rebound but the ball caught his finger before he caught the ball.  When he bent over holding his hand, I knew what had happened.  Apparently every other mom there knew what I knew and they knew what happened at baseball.  Poor guy was embarrassed he had 5 moms run to his rescue.  Guess it is still bruised?

And yes, the middle finger jokes have been made!  Josh kept "tattling" saying Tony was giving him the finger.  Our music pastor (yes, pastor) said on FB, "I thought maybe he gave you the finger and you broke it off."  So go ahead - got any better ones?  He can laugh at them when he is older and understands.
