Okay, so yesterday I had a meeting for school and a team that attended Love and Logic training shared. I came home to practice a little bit…more so than when my friend first shared it with me. If only she had shared 5 minutes earlier, because at the point she shared, Josh and I were already at each others throats and my 2 choices were 1. Kick his butt or 2. Kick his butt. I had 2 opportunities to practice yesterday and today – once on Dylan and once on Tony
2am Dylan and his friend are STILL running up and down the stairs after I had already asked them to settle down and to get quite. I couldn’t sleep, Richard was getting aggravated with the noise, and then they woke up Tony. I laid back down on the couch with Tony and he feel asleep. I tried but the noise continued. All of the sudden the words “Don’t worry about it” came to mind. I got up, called Dylan downstairs and said to him:
Dylan, I have asked you to get quite and you are still very noisy, but that’s okay, you continue to ignore my request and I’ll think of what your consequence will be. Remember, don’t worry, I’ll get back with you on your consequence.
Needless to say, Dylan looked like a deer in the headlights. It was silent the rest of the night and at this point, he is avoiding me. The waiting is killing him.
Now Tony’s turn to practice maybe wasn’t exactly the correct Love and Logic way, but the look on his face and the outcome is priceless! He wanted to eat his breakfast on my coffee table. I kept telling him “as soon as you are seated at the table you can eat breakfast” He didn’t go, so he didn’t eat. He finally got his own breakfast when I came to the computer to work on my homework. I looked up and saw his breakfast on the coffee table so I called him over. This is how that went:
Tony: “What ma’am”
Mommy: “I am going to give you 2 choices. You must choose one. Okay?”
Tony: With a look of uncertainty “Okay”
Mommy: “You may either take your bowl back to the kitchen because I am very sad you didn’t listen to me or you may go sit in your chair for 4 minutes”
Tony: no response just a look of ‘is she for real’
Mommy: “Well which would you like to do?”
Tony: “I’m not sitting in my chair!”
Mommy: ”Thank you for choosing to take your bowl back to the kitchen.”
Tony walked away and kept looking back at me with this look like I had totally lost it and the bowl was put away. I’m telling you, the look on both their faces was the best part of it all. Granted, getting things done the way I wanted was good too, but the looks on their faces was the icing on the cake!
