Goal Setting

This year Tony is very eager to reach his AR goal. In fact, on the way to school today we had a wonderful conversation about HIS goal. He started this conversation and pretty much was the one who had the say the whole time. So to catch everyone up, here is TONY's goal for AR this year:

"Mom, I might not reach my AR by Christmas."

That's okay, you have until April or early May. We will have it by then.

"No, after Christmas I have baseball and I will be busy. I want it before Christmas. I need to take a test 3 days every week. I couldn't go to the library yesterday. Take me home before you drop me off at school so I can get my Dr. Seuss book and read it all day at school. Then I will be ready to take a test tomorrow."

Tomorrow is Saturday. You can take the test over it on Monday.

"UGH!! (insert a little Tony meltdown) Fine, but mom you need to find out what books I have that I can test on. I want it done before Thanksgiving so I have all my tests by Christmas."

WHAT? Now this boy is setting deadlines for me, not just goals for himself. Tonight he sat for about an hour writing all his addition facts up to the 6's. He's doing so well and is enjoying school this year. And just a little update from this post, Tony made A honor roll this past 9 weeks. That's right STRAIGHT A's!! No, he is not soaring high above everyone else in his class, he works for those A's and we still see gaps, but he is finding ways to handle himself and figure things out. He is really taking a liking to mnemonic devices and hand signals to help him remember things. Favorite two so far - one of his spelling words last week was DRAW. He had a hard time remembering this one so he kept saying before he would spell it for me, "Josh likes DR. Pepper, Dylan Likes AW root beer. DRAW my brothers 2 drinks." Then he would spell it correctly DR AW. BED was another one, but his device for keeping his letters straight is a common one - hold both hands to form a b and d, "put the e to bed."
