Our original plan had been to leave on Saturday morning around 3:30 and drive as late into the night as possible, stop at a hotel for the night, get up Sunday morning and drive the remaining way.
However, Sharon’s memorial service was not until Sunday afternoon. So now the revised plan was to leave right after the service and drive through the night – all 19 hours with ALL 7 kids and 5 adults!!!!

Started the trip off with a group picture and we were on our way. The kids did great for being in the car so long – Kayann slept through the night, Dane, Abi, and Josh had plenty of electronics and movies to play and watch to keep them happy, Dylan enjoyed driving for about 5 hours of the trip and then again the next morning for the last 2 hours, and Jordonna had one small melt down right around bedtime because she was ready for bed and that car seat was just not cutting it! Good job for kids driving so far, right? Notice I didn’t mention TONY – that boy did not sleep but 3 hours of the entire drive. He was really good for not sleeping, but trying to keep him occupied for that long made it difficult. After we stopped for breakfast at Denny’s in Raton, I rode in my parent’s truck with him next to me and Jordonna on the other side and they both slept the remaining way. PEACEFUL!!!

Around 2pm on Monday afternoon we arrived at Creede, Colorado. Our cousin, Betsy, and her husband share a cabin here with her family and they each invite other family members to enjoy the cabin for vacation. Betsy has offered this cabin to us so many times, but we never really took her serious until this year. My mom and I finally said in January – “Let’s take a vacation. Let’s go skiing and use Betsy’s cabin.” And we got it rolling. We made menus and she cooked all the meals ahead of time and started shopping for resale ski clothes. We were ready!
Now that we were in Creede, we had a hard time finding the cabin. We knew the cabin was at the base of a mountain and the Rio Grande was in front of the cabin. After a few phone calls and a little more searching we finally found the cabin down a wet, slushy, snowy, icy road that lead to the bottom of a mountain. I really couldn’t tell you the direction of the road or the number of curves in the road because all I did was close my eyes, bow my head, hold my children’s hands and PRAYED we didn’t slip off the edge of that mountain as we were sliding all over the road.

Monday was already intended to be a day to rest and just get use to the elevation so that was how the rest of the day was spent for some. The kids immediately started playing in the snow as we sorted out luggage. They got the “redneck sleds” ready and started down the mountain in the snow. They built a snowman, complete with a carrot nose and Jordonna’s green bead necklace.

Then people started dropping left and right – Dane threw up, Kayann had a headache and threw up, Dylan had terrible sinus’ as did I and thought my ears would exploded any minute, and Josh was out cold in his bed upstairs. After taco soup and salad, we got baths and headed off to bed to get a good nights rest and recoup after a long drive, and long day. Tomorrow we are headed to Wolf Creek Ski Resort.
