Tony did football last Fall and just never fell in love with it. He stuck it out, he went to practice each evening, but let me tell you it was never without a fight and us having to really pull out the Love and Logic on him to get him there! This year (as sad as his Daddy was) Tony did not do football, but rather was very eager to start Boy Scouts - actually, Cub Scouts. To say he LOVES it might be an understatement. It has only been 3 weeks, but has given him so much confidence and he gets so excited each week. Already we have helped do "Beach Cleanup" and he earned his first patch 2 days after signing up. We purchased his uniform after the beach and 4 days later when he wore it to his den meeting and worked on memorizing his Scout Promise he told me that was the best evening EVER. The one thing I am enjoying the most is the walk to scouts and home each week since we live so close the meeting place. Last weekend, his den went to a museum, but due to schedule conflicts we opted to go participate in "Astronomy Day" at the Planetarium. (Have pics to upload and share more on that outing) This past week at the den meeting, popcorn sales were due, they were making a scrapbook, and I had to get myself and Tony ready with all the needed items for that, along with J by 6:30. Since we were already running late, I told Tony to just leave his shirt untucked - that they all do it and would be fine. He refused and wanted his full uniform with a tucked shirt. When we walked up and were moving inside after hearing from a Sheriff's officer on Being Safe, the SCOUTMASTER walked up to Tony and said, "Son, come stand over here." (I thought great, we are getting called out for being later) "Boys, I want you to all look at this scout. This is how everyone should look! Get your shirts tucked in!" WOW - Tony way to set an example. I was proud of you for insisting on full uniform guidelines.
One other Scout event that Tony has really shined and made me proud:
Scouts sell popcorn as their annual fundraiser. To help families out, they set up times to sell at area businesses. Our time slot was last Saturday. There was an empty time slot in the day, so Tony and I volunteered to move our time to keep the booth set up and running. I really thought that it would be me selling popcorn while a boy in uniform was going crazy behind me. Actually it ended up being an adorable scout standing at the door offering popcorn to EVERY person that came in and out. He explained the kinds we had, emphasised that the $18 for a box got you 18 bags of popcorn, and the crazy one running around was his sister (thankfully Dylan took her to ride the electronic horse ride inside). As for the mom, I sat in my chair and held onto the money bag. In 2 hrs, and all by himself, he sold/got donations totalling $261. WooHoo!!
